Vineyards alongside the wild Australian bush, rolling fields, stone cottages, rural villages full of urban amenities such as pubs, cafes, art galleries and cellar doors characterize Clare Valley. Clare Valley includes the towns of Auburn, Burra, Clare, Kapunda, Mintaro, Penwortham, Sevenhill and Watervale. The valley's heartland is concentrated around Clare, a town 120-kilometer north of Adelaide and with a population of about 3,000. Since time immemorial, the Ngadjuri people have lived in Clare Valley. At the Red Banks Conservation Park near Burra, the new generation of Ngadjuri and archaeologists uncovered a burial ground of the Ngadjuri people. Then, in the 19th century, the Irish began to settle in this valley. The wineries, producing award-winning Cabernet Sauvugnons, Rieslings and other cool-climate wines, made Claire Valley world famous. In mid 19th century, the Jesuit priests were known to have planted the first grapes in this valley. Nowadays, the Jesuit priests still continue to make sacramental wine at Australia's most atypical winery, the Sevenhill. One can visit, either by walking or biking, the valley's best wineries by following the Riesling Trail—a trail stretching from Auburn to Clare. Along this trail as well, one can walk or pedal by a number of art galleries. While wineries made Clare Valley world renowned, mining and farming made this place wealthy. On the eastern part of this valley lie the towns of Kapunda and Burra—old copper mining towns. On the western part of this valley lie the great plains farmed by the Irish settlers. The town of Mintaro in Clare Valley offers an atmospheric cafes, pubs and great restaurants. A network of bed and breakfast establishments can be found in Clare Valley, many are situated in rural settings. Alternately, one can stay at grand mansions and merino sheep stations in Clare Valley where one can experience the rich pastoral traditions of the place. Many of Clare Valley's restaurants, bed and breakfasts, and cellar doors are situated in stone cottages. These stone cottages are made up of locally hewn stones.
